2.10 million people were in contact with mental health services, at the end of May

The majority of these (1.39 million) were in contact with adult mental health services 

511,321 people were in contact with children and young people’s mental health services, at the end of May

 

Inpatient Age and Gender

(250, 12%) of inpatients are under 18 and (40, 2%) are 65 and over. The largest number of inpatients are in the 25-34 group (610, 30%).

Overall, there were more males than females in hospital. 

Total Length of Stay

An inpatient’s total length of stay is the time since the date of their first admission to any hospital as part of this continuous period of inpatient care.

Of those in hospital at the end of the month, 1,010 (49%) have had a total length of stay over 2 years. This includes 315 who have been in hospital for more than 10 years.

Summary findings from MHSDS

MHSDS main findings - May 2025

At the end of May 2025 (based on hospital spells data):
 

  • There were 3,715 people with learning disabilities and/ or autistic spectrum disorders (LDA) in hospital.

  • There were 1,370 admissions and 1,465 discharges. 78% of these were discharged back into the community.
     

  • There were 433,750 referrals¹ for people with LDA.

    Of these inpatients:
     

  • 1,110 (30%) had been in hospital for over 2 years.

  • There are 1,435 inpatients with a planned discharge date (39%).

  • 325 (9%) had a delayed discharge.

  • The largest proportion (27%) were aged between 25-34 (990).

  • The lowest proportion (6%) were aged under 18 (220).

  • 66% were male (2,470) and 32% were female (1,185).

    Findings based on ward stays data:
     

  • There were 3,655 ward stays reported for the end of the period.

  • The largest group of inpatients were in an adult mental health ward (2,120, 58%), followed by a learning disabilities ward (755, 21%). 

  • 2,270 (62%) were in a non-secure setting². 1,205 (33%) were in a secure setting.

  • 470 (13%) travelled over 50km from home to get to the hospital for care or treatment.

  • 825 patients were restrained at least once.

    1 These include all open referrals without a hospital spell associated with them if the inpatient did not need to stay overnight in hospital.
    Non-secure wards include inpatients in general wards. Secure wards include patients in low, medium and high secure ward settings.

1,210 (59%) of inpatients are in a non-secure ward, and 835 (41%) are in a secure ward. 70 (3%) of inpatients were in a high secure ward setting.

Non-secure wards include inpatients in general wards and psychiatric intensive care units (PICU). Secure wards include patients with low, medium and high secure ward settings.
